Rhode Island School of Design may be known for its art and architecture programs, but behind the scenes, its auxiliary services operation is anything but conventional. From a two-dimensional art supply store with a built-in café to an Airbnb property, a food pantry, and an external conferences and events program , RISD’s model is a study in creative resourcefulness.

Ginnie Dunleavy, Executive Director of Auxiliary Services at RISD, joins Sojo Alex to share what that looks like in practice, and where she sees the greatest opportunity for the industry as a whole.

Her answer centers less on operations and more on people. Specifically, attracting individuals with a natural gift for hospitality into careers in higher education: a space she describes as deeply meaningful and widely overlooked.
